w/ Capturing Sublime Photography
One of the most common questions is:
Where should we take our photos?
Each of these spots is beautiful in its own way, and I have photographed at all of them so you'll see exactly what it looks like in real life.
These are outdoor spots I love for families, couples, and maternity sessions. All of them have space to move around and offer different types of variety. None of them require a permit to shoot at, and are local to the Dayton area.
A Note About Time of Day
Lighting changes everything in photography. Golden hour (the hour right after sunrise or right before sunset) is always the most flattering if you want that soft warm light, glowing skin, and dreamy tones.
- Mornings: quieter, especially at popular locations, and the light is gentle. There will be dew in the grass, but we will prepare for that. It's much more calm, and you will still have the rest of the day and your nice outfits. You can go on a date, or hit the farmers market.
- Evenings: magical if we can catch the right light, it may be a little busier, but more approachable if you have work during the daytime.
Winter days are shorter, so evening golden hour happens earlier. If you don't want golden hour, or if it turns out to be a cloudy day, we don't have to worry about this. Something to note: harsh sun in the middle of the day will have you squinting, and will bounce any colors around you onto your skin, including your clothing. We can still do the middle of the day, but we will need to find somewhere with shade. If you want to reach out to me and ask any questions, feel free.
Choosing Your Location
Here's how I recommend thinking about it:
- Do you like flowers and gardens? -> Smith Memorial Gardens, James Ranch, or Benham's Grove.
- Want something classic with buildings and variety? -> Benham's Grove Smith Memorial Gardens, or Polen Farm.
- Prefer wide open, natural space? -> Polen Farm, or James Ranch.
- Want to bring your pet(s)? -> Benham's Grove, or James Ranch.
Want to choose your own spot?
I love exploring new places, but before we commit to a location, I will need to check it out first. Some parks, preserves, and even some random fields require photography permits. To avoid surprises like fees or being told to leave mid shoot, I will confirm your suggested spot before we book.
If there's a place that's meaningful to you, like a family property, a trail you hike regularly, or somewhere special you spend time together, let me know. I am happy to look into it! A reminder: these photos should represent you. Not a Pinterest board, not a trend that is fleeting, but who you are and what you love.
Here's the thing.
I love all of these spots, but realistically?
The location isn't the star of the show, you are. The place just sets the mood. What actually matters is how you laugh together, how close you are, and how much you're willing to just go with it when I throw out prompts. A session with me isn't about sitting stiff and one spot. We'll move, run, play, and create little moments that look like you. If these spots feel like you're kind of place, then honestly, we are already on the same page. You can book your session here, or reach out to me directly.
